I had the pleasure of photographing Bhishmar Lakshman’s Mridanga Arangetram, held in Toronto, Canada on July 27th, 2025. It was an inspiring evening filled with vibrant rhythms, cultural heritage, and the proud culmination of years of dedicated training.

A Mridanga Arangetram is a debut performance by a student of the Mridangam, a classical South Indian percussion instrument. It marks the student’s formal entry as a performer, showcasing their mastery of intricate rhythms and techniques under the guidance of their guru.

Bhishmar is a disciple of Shri S Surenthar of Gowri Vidyalaya Academy of Percussive Arts. Bhishmar’s performance was nothing short of captivating. His precision, energy, and passion lit up the stage, leaving the audience in awe. Surrounded by his family, friends, and industry experts, it was a truly memorable event that beautifully celebrated both his talent and this timeless art form. Kalaimamani Sri. Tiruvarur Vaidyanathan, a world renowned Mridanga Vidwan, who is also the Guru of Shri S. Surenthar, attended the event as the Chief Guest.
